Greens Leader Urges Peaceful Protests Against AfD Party Conference, Citing Right to Blockades

Felix Banaszak, the chairman of the Green Party, is calling for peaceful protests during the AfD’s federal party conference in Thuringia this weekend. Speaking to the television channel “Welt,” Banaszak stressed the importance of remaining peaceful while ensuring that the demonstration projects a strong image of a resilient, yet peaceful, democracy.

He acknowledged that blockades could be a legitimate method of protest, stating, “But we are calling for people to stand together. You can do that standing up. You can also send a strong signal while standing still against a party that threatens to destroy much of what makes our country strong.”

The Green Party politician argued that democracy cannot be defended from behind closed doors, thereby asserting that people’ engagement is justified. “The more people follow this call, the clearer the picture will be, undoubtedly dominated by peaceful protesters who worry about what kind of country we will live in soon. I share that concern, and that’s why I believe it is right for people to show up.”
