Airbus Demands General Service Duty to Bolster German Defense Against Russian Threat

René Obermann, the Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Airbus, has called for mandatory national service in Germany. Speaking to Focus, the manager stated that the growth of the German armed forces (Bundeswehr) is not advancing quickly enough, emphasizing that “time is running short.”

Obermann pointed to Russia’s mobilization on the eastern flank, noting that it is likely preparing to intensify small-scale incursions against Europe before launching a larger assault. Satellite image analysis has already demonstrated a steady increase in Russia’s logistical and military capabilities. According to Obermann, Russia will probably try to surprise the West by manipulating the timing and form of its attacks.

He asserted that “of course we need more soldiers.” He mentioned that the net increase has been approximately 1,500 soldiers since the beginning of 2026.

However, Obermann does not want to limit the concept to a “draft” (Wehrpflicht). Instead, he prefers the term “civil service duty” (Dienstpflicht) because resilience must be strengthened across civilian sectors as well. He stressed that this duty should apply to both men and women. “There is no other way,” Obermann declared. “We really have to do everything for prevention.”
