AfD Party Congress Continues in Erfurt with Focus on Internal Rules Amid Low Protest Intensity

The AfD continued its federal party conference in Erfurt on Sunday morning. The central focus of this second and final day of the gathering is internal discussions concerning amendments to the party statutes and other regulations; no major ideological controversies are anticipated at the event. To conclude the meeting, re-elected leaders Tino Chrupalla and Alice Weidel plan to address the delegates.

Compared to the previous day, massive protests did not take place. So far, only a bicycle demonstration organized by the ADFC and a coffee gathering arranged by the group “Grandmothers Against the Right” have been registered. Furthermore, many demonstrators who traveled to the Thuringian capital by bus have already departed, leaving the access routes to the convention center empty apart from the heavy police presence. Attempts to prevent or delay the conference with blockades failed yesterday, as most delegates had arrived at the trade fair venue overnight.

Police reports indicated that roughly 31,000 people participated in protests surrounding Erfurt. Additionally, approximately 10,000 individuals were involved in blockade actions, while organizers claimed the total number of protestors was around 50,000. Although the demonstrations were mostly peaceful, there were instances of unrest during which police deployed pepper spray. An attack on several media representatives also occurred. In total, law enforcement recorded at least 48 criminal offenses and eleven administrative violations.
