AfD Leaders Vow to Enter Government and Tackle Upcoming State Elections

Concluding the AfD federal party day in Erfurt, party chairmen Tino Chrupalla and Alice Weidel pledged their party’s ambition for potential near-future governmental responsibility. Speaking at the end of Sunday’s delegate meeting in Erfurt, Chrupalla stated that the party must finally move out of opposition and into government. He affirmed that they are ready to lead and aim to completely overhaul the nation (“turn this country upside down”). To achieve this, he stressed the need for “strength and persuasiveness.” Looking ahead at the federal level, Chrupalla also noted that the party must be prepared for possible snap elections, and these needs to be managed proactively. The chief of staff set a specific target: gaining “four to five more percent” of support, aiming to take over government in the Bundestag by 2029 at the latest. Meanwhile, Weidel focused on the immediate priorities, emphasizing that the full attention must now be directed toward the upcoming state elections in September in Saxony-Anhalt and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, as well as the chamber election in Berlin. “We are a 30-percent people’s party, and we are by far the strongest force in Eastern Germany,” Weidel asserted, adding that the AfD is committed to governing and taking responsibility.
