Bundestag Vice President Omid Nouripour (The Greens) has strongly criticized US President Donald Trump’s threat to launch a harsh night attack against Iran. Speaking to the TV channel “Welt” on Wednesday, Nouripour questioned the purpose of such a move. He argued that there would be a greater need for consideration regarding the civilian population. He believes this is because it is not foreseeable that the US could truly force Iran into submission with a heavy blow.
The foreign politician views the current situation as an attempt to build rapport for negotiations. “I don’t know if that will work,” said Nouripour. Although he agrees that the regime in Tehran cannot be trusted, he argues that it is unrealistic to simply “bomb indiscriminately and arbitrarily somewhere” and expect the Iran to surrender and open the Strait of Hormuz just because it has been weakened.
Nouripour suspects that Trump intends to send an internal political message, preventing him from appearing as the loser of the conflict within the United States. However, he stresses that such action will not assist the people of Iran. He detailed the current conditions inside the country: “There are waves of arrests, there are waves of executions. The regime has now permanently installed checkpoints at many relevant intersections in large cities. Furthermore, the internet is still being massively throttled,” he explained. “This severely impacts the people in Iran.”
Nouripour also warned that new attacks on Iran would inevitably affect Germany. He stated, “It is quite visible that oil prices will rise again. It will then be noticeable very quickly at the pumps here in Germany. Therefore, this affects us severely.”
