Ukrainian Ambassador Points to Gerhard Schröder as Potential Mediator for Putin Talks

Andrij Melnyk, the former Ukrainian ambassador to Germany, suggested that former Chancellor Gerhard Schröder could potentially participate in confidential discussions with Vladimir Putin. Speaking to the “Spiegels” feature “Spitzengespräch,” Melnyk stated that Schröder could make a personal contribution toward bringing the parties closer and could use their friendship to convey specific messages.

While describing Schröder as a “tragic figure,” Melnyk noted that he maintains access to Putin in his current state of mind. Furthermore, Melnyk called upon CDU leader Friedrich Merz to send Gerhard Schröder to Moscow and report back on the discussions. “I hope that Mr. Merz carries this out, that he utilizes this channel,” Melnyk added.
