BDI Warns Against AfD Government Participation, Citing Economic Risks and Talent Shortages

The Federal Association of German Industry (BDI) has warned about the severe economic consequences should the Alternative for Germany (AfD) participate in government. According to BDI CEO Tanja Gönner, an inclusion of the AfD would be “fatal.”

Gönner emphasized the growing labor shortage, stating that Germany cannot afford to deterrent qualified skilled workers from abroad.

She clarified that the legal framework governing local business conditions is primarily set by the European Union and the federal government, noting the existence of a “stable rule of law at all levels.” However, she added that state governments play a key role in shaping the climate of a specific location.

Dr. Gönner argued that the AfD fails to provide convincing answers to the country’s fundamental economic challenges. She warned that their political stance would complicate investments, generate uncertainty, and consequently weaken the German business sector instead of encouraging growth.
