Ines Schwerdtner, the leader of the Left Party (Linke), is seeking wider alliances with trade unions and other groups to protest the federal government’s reform plans. Speaking during an ARD summer interview on Sunday, Schwerdtner stated, “We need broad coalitions against this social stripping.” She emphasized that various professional groups are raising the alarm, including general practitioners, midwives, and nurses, making wide public protest necessary.
Furthermore, the Left Party leader strongly criticized the black-and-red coalition’s plan preventing states from socializing large real estate corporations. Schwerdtner argued that such a move contradicts the German Basic Law (Grundgesetz), specifically referencing Article 15, which allows for such socialization. She asserted that the federal government is reportedly planning a law that would run contrary to the Basic Law itself.
The Left Party leader continued her demand that housing should not be treated as a source of profit. She maintained that housing represents a home, a roof over one’s head, and the ability to raise one’s children. Consequently, the Left Party intends to transfer apartments currently owned by major real estate corporations back into public ownership. Schwerdtner explained that this would enable tenants to have a say in crucial decisions, such as how renovations are managed and how properties can be upgraded in an ecologically sound manner.
