In the recent discussion concerning state-provided maintenance allowances for those who fail to pay child support, SPD politician Jasmina Hostert has proposed the introduction of stadium bans as a punitive measure. Speaking on Monday on the “Welt” news program, the spokesperson for Education, Family, Seniors, Women, and Youth within the SPD parliamentary group asserted that the state needs to significantly increase the consequences for failing to provide maintenance payments.
Hostert suggested that a stadium ban could be a more effective solution than measures like revoking a driver’s license or other forms of punishment, noting that this would “hurt many people.” While acknowledging that the revocation of licenses was already under debate, she pointed out that implementing such a mandate must also consider whether it would hinder fathers’ ability to work. Instead, she proposed alternatives, including stadium bans, and went as far as suggesting the inclusion of negative entries in the Schufa credit registry.
She emphasized that it is unacceptable “if someone can afford a season ticket to the stadium but cannot pay maintenance for their own child,” believing that this situation indicates a fundamental problem. Hostert stressed that most individuals who refuse to pay maintenance are men. Furthermore, she sharply criticized the state’s current collection rate, which she described as a mere 17 percent, calling it “far, far too little.”
