Manuela Schwesig, the Minister-President of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, has clarified her position in the ongoing debate regarding the direction of the Social Democratic Party (SPD). She has stated that she supports the SPD’s current leadership and has dismissed her own ambitions to become the party chairman.
Speaking to Spiegel, Schwesig affirmed her working relationship with Lars Klingbeil and Bärbel Bas, noting, “I supported Lars Klingbeil and Bärbel Bas from the beginning, and I also work well with them.” However, she also acknowledged that this collaboration does not mean they always share the same viewpoint. She values that both individuals respect different opinions and allow for open debate.
“For me, it is important to discuss content and not engage in personnel discussions,” she added. Schwesig remains committed to her current role, having announced that she is running for five more years as the Minister-President of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in the September state election. Despite her political prominence, the SPD politician confirmed that she does not plan to take on the role of party chairwoman.
