Merz Pushes Algeria Partnership for Energy Security and Hydrogen Supply

Chancellor Friedrich Merz emphasized Algeria’s capacity to provide increased raw material supplies during a meeting with Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune at the Chancellor’s Office this past Thursday. Merz pointed out that Algeria possesses significant natural reserves, including crude oil, natural gas, and rare earths. He also noted that the country has already provided a crucial contribution to securing European energy supplies in recent years, particularly concerning gas deliveries.

Looking toward the future, Merz indicated a desire to expand cooperation into hydrogen exports. He stated that he and Italy intend to jointly advance the development of a “southern hydrogen corridor.” Furthermore, the two leaders discussed strengthening economic collaboration generally. Merz told reporters that during the discussion with Tebboune, they addressed improvements concerning the investment climate, legal certainty, and establishing reliable and transparent operational procedures.
