Germany and France Deepen Strategic Ties with Plans for Nuclear Military Exercises

Germany intends to take part in additional French nuclear exercises. This decision was announced by Friedrich Merz of the CDU following the Franco-German Ministerial Council in Brühl on Friday. Merz stated that conventional German forces will participate in a French military nuclear exercise this year. The Chancellor added that this participation complements Germany’s existing role in nuclear talks and commitment to NATO deterrence.

A preliminary joint exercise, involving French Rafale and German Eurofighter fighters for aerial refueling, was already conducted on Thursday. These Rafale jets are capable of deploying atomic weapons. The movement of strategic French Air Force Rafale fighters to Tactical Air Wing 31 “Boelcke” in Nörvenich on Friday represents the first operational step in the strategic Franco-German collaboration, with further steps planned throughout the year, including the announced joint nuclear exercises.
