During the visit of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev to Berlin, Germany and Azerbaijan agreed on several new initiatives. Following the meeting, Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) stated that signing a joint declaration laid the foundation for expanding relations between the two countries. Merz also announced that the formation of a German-Azerbaijani Business Council was agreed upon, sending a strong message to companies in both nations regarding the seriousness of building stronger ties.
Given the ongoing crisis in the Middle East, a particular focus of the discussion was collaboration on oil and gas supply through the Southern Gas Corridor. The Chancellor confirmed that he and Aliyev had a detailed conversation about these energy partnerships. They expressed a commitment to further diversifying their energy supply through Azerbaijan, and they also discussed expanding renewable energy sources and hydrogen technology. Furthermore, constructive talks took place regarding an investment program proposed by Azerbaijan, which Merz noted could open up “new opportunities” for German companies.
