The suspected perpetrator of a fatal stabbing attack at a bank branch in Regensburg is currently in custody. Police and the public prosecutor’s office reported on Friday that the 20-year-old German man is strongly suspected of murder and severe robbery/extortion. This suspect, who was already known to the authorities, had reported himself to the police less than 24 hours before the incident.
On Thursday, around 2:50 PM, the suspect entered the bank and showed an employee a note with the words “Bank robbery” and “Assault.” He then drew a kitchen knife with a twelve-centimeter blade and walked past the counter. Because the branch operates without cash, the employee could not hand over any money. However, the perpetrator repeatedly stabbed the bank employee, who later died from his injuries.
The police managed to arrest the suspect approximately three hours later within the building. The man refused to comment on the charges against him. Investigations are underway regarding homicide and aggravated robbery. The 20-year-old was previously known to authorities, notably due to a firearms ban and an incident the previous night where he allegedly threw a beer bottle onto police grounds.
