The investigation into the attack on the Berlin Christopher Street Day (CSD) is continuing even after the suspect’s death. The Federal Prosecutor’s Office has taken charge of the inquiry, but rapid results are not anticipated. One fact that remains unclear is whether a second person was traveling with the suspect in the vehicle.
Politically, the reckoning has also begun. The suspect was known to authorities as an extremist Islamist agitator and had previously been convicted. Authorities are facing criticism because he was still on bail upon committing the attack. Furthermore, there are strong calls from politicians for harsher criminal legislation.
Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt (CSU) expressed his disbelief regarding the sentence given during the suspect’s earlier conviction. Telling RTL, he stated, “It is certainly incomprehensible that, given the level of danger present here, he received a probation sentence of that magnitude.”
According to reports, Abdul B. reportedly sped through the Berlin Tiergarten around 10 p.m. on Saturday in a small truck, where CSD participants were celebrating. Subsequently, he apparently attacked passersby with a machete. A total of 29 people were injured in the assault, and one woman was killed. The attacker was located in a small allotment garden in Spandau on Sunday evening and was shot during a police operation.
