Lagarde Steps Down as ECB President Amid French Political Turmoil and Succession Scramble

Christine Lagarde has announced that she will step down as President of the European Central Bank (ECB) prematurely, with her final day being February 7, 2027. The ECB in Frankfurt stated that on Thursday, Lagarde informed the ECB Council and the President of the European Council, Antonio Costa, of this decision. Under the current terms, her eight-year mandate would have officially ended at the close of October 2027.

While rumors of an early departure were previously circulating, reports suggest that the decision was significantly influenced by the French presidential election scheduled for April 2027. There is concern that a victory by euro-critical right-populists, such as Marine Le Pen, could complicate the selection of the next ECB head.

Several candidates are being discussed as potential successors to Lagarde. Among the favorites are Klaas Knot, the former Dutch central bank chief, and Pablo Hernandez de Cos, the head of the Bank for International Settlements (BIS). Additionally, Joachim Nagel, president of the German Bundesbank, has also been mentioned as a potential contender.
