The German Armed Forces (Bundeswehr) deployed helicopters and firefighting equipment to southwest France on Monday to assist in combating devastating forest fires. According to the Federal Ministry of Defence, the fires have spread significantly in both France and Spain over the last few days, with authorities so far unable to bring them under control. Responding to a request from French authorities, the Bundeswehr identified and mobilized specific capacities to support the firefighting efforts. To aid the French forces, the German military transported two CH-53 transport helicopters, alongside firefighting gear and other material, to the French military base Cazaux using an A400M aircraft. Currently, the German support is scheduled to focus on the forest fires in the area around Bordeaux, and the initial deployment is planned for five days, in coordination with French partners.
