German GDP Inches Up in Q2, Driven by Exports as Consumption and Investment Slow

The German gross domestic product (GDP) grew by 0.2% in the second quarter of 2026 compared to the first quarter of the same year, according to figures released by the Federal Statistical Office on Thursday. Year-on-year, the economic output saw a stronger increase, standing at 0.9%.

Among the contributing factors, exports rose against the previous quarter. However, preliminary data indicated that consumer spending remained sluggish while investments declined.

The Bundesamt also provided an upwards revision for the first quarter. Economic performance had already seen an increase at the beginning of the year; the statisticians have since adjusted the figures upward, raising the initial reported rise of 0.3% compared to the preceding quarter to an estimated 0.4%.
