AfD Gains Traction in Saxony-Anhalt Poll, Jumps Ahead of CDU as Election Nears

Just six weeks before the state election in Saxony-Anhalt, the AfD currently stands as the strongest political force, according to a poll conducted by the Institute Infratest. The survey, commissioned by MDR, WDR, Mitteldeutsche Zeitung, and Volksstimme, shows the AfD at 41 percent. Meanwhile, the CDU has lost two percentage points compared to the previous poll in May, dropping to 24 percent.

Political shifts include The Left gaining one point, reaching 13 percent. The SPD and BSW remained unchanged at 7 percent and 4 percent, respectively. The Greens improved by one point, now standing at 5 percent, while the FDP scored significantly below the five-percent hurdle and no value was assigned to them.

If these figures reflected the final election outcome and the Greens failed to secure representation in the state parliament, the absolute parliamentary majority required by the AfD would be 45 percent. However, should the Greens narrowly miss reaching parliament, the necessary threshold would fall to 42 or 43 percent, bringing the AfD much closer to seizing power.

Regarding which party should lead the government post-election, voters polled in the Infratest survey indicated a slight preference for the AfD (44 percent) over the CDU (43 percent). Additionally, a substantial 60 percent of respondents rejected the possibility of a joint CDU-AfD coalition.

Public satisfaction with the current state government remains low. Only 29 percent of respondents reported being satisfied or very satisfied, marking a four-percentage-point decrease from the May poll. A broader majority-66 percent-are less or entirely dissatisfied. The share of people who are completely dissatisfied increased by four points, now at 28 percent. Dissatisfaction spans across the political spectrum: 90 percent of AfD supporters are dissatisfied with the government, compared to 25 percent of CDU supporters.

The Infratest polling was carried out between July 23rd and 28th, totaling 1,149 responses gathered via phone or online. The election in Saxony-Anhalt is scheduled for September 6th.
