DAX Gains Despite Investor Caution Amid Major Economic Decisions and Inflation Risks

On Wednesday, the Dax showed an increase. At the close of Xetra trading, the index settled at 25,704 points, representing a 0.4 percent gain compared to the previous day’s closing. Deutsche Bank, Siemens Energy, and Infineon led the gainers, while Symrise, Zalando, and DHL were among the decliners.

Despite the positive trend in the Dax, Andreas Lipkow, Chief Market Analyst at CMC Markets, noted that investors remain noticeably cautious. Two critical tests for the stock markets lie ahead: the US Federal Reserve’s interest rate decision, along with the subsequent earnings reports from Microsoft and Alphabet.

Lipkow stated that the ongoing earnings season has provided a mixed picture. In the Dax, Deutsche Bank and Mercedes-Benz managed to impress with their results, while the figures released by Symrise and BASF were more disappointing. Similarly, in the United States, the generally positive earnings momentum continues with results from Vertiv and Biogen. “Investors are increasingly distinguishing between companies that can meet high expectations and those where difficult economic conditions are already showing significant impact,” Lipkow observed.

Interestingly, the analyst added that even the rise in energy prices currently has barely triggered selling pressure. He suggested that investors may have developed some habituation to high costs. Furthermore, hopes for diplomatic progress in the Middle East, largely fueled by mediation efforts from certain Gulf states, are adding an element of optimism. However, he cautioned that inflation risks are far from eliminated; they are currently being overshadowed on the stock markets by positive corporate news.

Lipkow concluded that the true directional decision is likely to arrive this evening, emphasizing that the Fed must next explain how it intends to structure its monetary policy in light of high energy prices and associated inflationary risks. Concurrently, Microsoft and Alphabet must demonstrate that their multibillion-dollar investments in AI remain underpinned by convincing growth and solid cash flows.

In other financial news, the European common currency strengthened slightly on Wednesday afternoon. The Euro exchanged for $1.1148, while the dollar was available for 0.8970 Euros. Meanwhile, the price of oil rose; a barrel of Brent crude in the North Sea cost $116.40 around 5 PM German time, marking a 2.2 percent gain from the end of the previous trading day.
