Eichwede Pledges Coalition Action Following Berlin CSD Terror Attack, Focusing on Prevention and Investigation

Sonja Eichwede, the SPD’s Deputy Parliamentary Group Leader, has announced that the coalition plans to take decisive action following the terrorist attack on the Berlin CSD a week ago.

Speaking to the “Rheinische Post” on Tuesday, Eichwede noted that while the immediate priority remains providing help and support to the victims and their relatives, the coming focus will be on investigation and preventing similar incidents in the future. She stressed that the attack constituted an assault on Germany’s free and open society and must be strongly condemned.

The SPD politician indicated that the Bundestag Interior Committee will hold a comprehensive discussion on the intelligence gathered by security authorities on Tuesday. She highlighted the necessity of closely analyzing the situation, particularly concerning radicalized lone actors and security threats like the one seen in this case, in order to prevent future violence.

The Deputy Group Leader affirmed that the coalition is prepared to take consistent political action. This commitment extends not only to the police and intelligence investigations but also to measures concerning prevention.
