Speaking out against the belief that it might neglect the topic of right-wing extremism while focusing more heavily on left-wing extremism and Islamism, a spokesperson for the Federal Centre for Political Education (BPB) stated to the “Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland” that the organization will continue to offer numerous programs regarding right-wing extremism alongside coverage of other extremist currents.
Furthermore, BPB Vice President Volker Ullrich refuted reports claiming that traditional study trips to Israel had been discontinued. Ullrich clarified that these trips are temporarily suspended due to the Foreign Office’s travel warning and will be resumed once the security situation changes.
Addressing an upcoming cultural event, Ullrich also announced that an exhibition commemorating the 50th anniversary of the rescue of the Lufthansa aircraft “Landshut,” which had been seized by the Red Army Faction (RAF), will open on October 18, 2027, in Friedrichshafen on Lake Constance. While the exact duration of the exhibition is currently under review, Ullrich noted that it could run for a longer period if the necessary financial resources become available.
In addition to these operational announcements, the BPB is navigating a current leadership crisis. The president’s office remained vacant for six months initially. Subsequent to that, Sönke Rix, a former Social Democrat MP, resigned as the new president after only five months, citing “personal reasons.” Currently, Ullrich, who previously served as a CSU Member of Parliament, is in charge of the institution.
