In response to new social media calls suggesting a possible mass rush onto the Spanish exclave of Ceuta on August 15th, Austria is urging Spain to significantly tighten its border security.
Claudia Bauer, the Minister of European and Integration affairs (ÖVP), stated that she holds Madrid partly responsible for recent developments, arguing that Spain has inadvertently created a “mega-magnet.” According to Bauer, misinformation circulating on social media and human smugglers have amplified the attraction to the area. She added to the newspaper that it now needs to be determined whether and by what geopolitical players this ongoing crisis has been exacerbated.
The current alerts stem from mobilization calls circulating within Moroccan Facebook, TikTok, and WhatsApp groups. Regional authorities in Ceuta have relayed this information to Spanish security agencies. Government spokesman Alejandro Ramírez confirmed to “El Mundo” that the authorities have been informed.
Bauer emphasized that these current calls demonstrate that this dangerous dynamic has not subsided. She stressed that Spain must immediately and massively upgrade the border security in its African exclaves, given the reports of a potential new surge, and must guarantee that this enhanced security holds this time.
While Austria acknowledges and recognizes the Spanish government’s swift actions following the migration influx to Ceuta last week, Madrid shares responsibility via its migration policies for the false hopes that preceded the events. Bauer noted that the announcement of providing hundreds of thousands of residency permits may not have been the sole trigger, but it certainly served as an accelerant. She concluded that, “Nobody reads the legal footnotes in Morocco. Only one message has reached them: if you manage to reach Spain, you can hope for a residency permit”-a message, she asserted, that seems unchanged.
