The Social Democratic Party (SPD) is advocating for the establishment of a federal fire service in response to the increasing incidence of forest fires across Germany.
Fractional deputy Esra Limbacher told the “Rheinische Post” that the recent forest and vegetation fires clearly demonstrate that the requirements for civil protection are evolving. Speaking on this development, Limbacher believes it would be sensible to consider a federal fire service unit that could be deployed as a support mechanism during major forest fires.
This proposed federal unit could possess specialized capabilities that every district or federal state cannot independently establish-for example, advanced aerial firefighting capabilities. Furthermore, it would be tasked with supporting first responders on the ground. Concurrently, she stressed that existing firefighting equipment and responsibilities must be reviewed to ensure they remain adequate for the future dangers that may arise.
The concept of a “Federal Fire Service” is part of a broader heat protection plan developed by Limbacher on behalf of the SPD. This comprehensive plan includes several other provisions, such as raising standards for social facilities (for instance, through the provision of air conditioning), reorganizing water supply systems, and incorporating climate protection into the Basic Law.
