According to the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), travelers from Germany made a total of 274 million private and business trips, involving at least one overnight stay, domestically or abroad, in 2025. Overall, this represented a slight decrease of 1.1% compared to 2024.

Domestic travel experienced a notable increase in 2025, rising by 3.9% to 169 million trips. This figure is also 5.0% higher than the levels recorded in 2019, prior to the pandemic. In contrast, international travel declined, with 105 million trips taken in 2025-an 8.3% drop compared to the previous year. Despite this decrease, foreign travel is 5.4% higher than it was in 2019.

Business trips were the primary driver behind the rise in domestic travel. The number of professional journeys grew by 10.5% over 2024, reaching 41 million. This nearly matches the pre-pandemic level, showing only a minor decrease of 0.2% from 2019. For private journeys, there was a slight reduction of 2.9% compared to 2024, resulting in approximately 233 million trips, though this still marks a 6.2% increase over the 2019 figures.

Regarding international destinations, Italy remained the most popular choice in 2025, accounting for 12.4% of all foreign travel. The top five countries, often shifting in rank, have consistently been favorites for German travelers for the last decade: Italy (12.4%), Austria (11.1%), Spain (10.9%), France (8.3%), and the Netherlands (7.7%).

When examining travel modalities, the car continues to be the most frequently used method for multi-day journeys, accounting for 60.2% of all trips. Train travel made up 19.2%, while air travel accounted for 15.2%. Coach buses made up the smallest share, at 2.7% of the transport methods utilized.
