The Social Association of Germany (SoVD) is calling for a reduction in the electricity tax in response to high energy prices. Michaela Engelmeier, Chairwoman of the SoVD, told the “Rheinische Post” that the federal government cannot afford to leave citizens isolated amidst rising costs of living. She stressed that the required response must go beyond simple petrol pump subsidies, unlike the situation in Poland. Engelmeier argued that low-income households allocate a significantly greater proportion of their disposable income toward essential living expenses, and therefore, the electricity tax for private households should decrease. Furthermore, she stated that assistance must be directed specifically to areas where high prices have an existential impact on individuals. To ensure that any potential aid can be disbursed quickly and reliably, the creation of a functional state direct payment mechanism is now urgently needed.
