Linke Demands Expropriation of Housing Giants to Solve Berlin’s Rental Crisis

Ines Schwerdtner, the leader of the Left party, maintains her insistence on expropriating residential conglomerates. Speaking to RTL and ntv, she stated that while the move would incur costs, “we must be able to afford it. Housing is a human right.” She stressed that the housing shortage in Berlin is so massive that urgent action is needed.

The primary objective of the Berlinese Left party is to make housing affordable. “That is why we say we must immediately put an end to rent gouging. We must stop illegally increased rents,” Schwerdtner asserted. While advocating for social housing, she also emphasized the necessity of socialization. She referenced the Berlin public referendum, noting that the majority of Berliners supported transferring property ownership back into public hands. “And we intend to implement that. We take very seriously what the people of Berlin have given us,” Schwerdtner said.

Regarding whether the seizure of residential corporations is an absolute prerequisite for a Berlin governing coalition, Schwerdtner replied: “It is completely clear to me that we must bring this into the coalition negotiations.” She added with confidence that Elif Eralp would certainly address this issue.
