UEFA official Nadine Keßler has unexpectedly declined the appointment as State Minister for Sport and Volunteering at the Federal Chancellery. According to reports from government circles quoted in the newspaper “Bild”, Keßler is no longer available for the position.
Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) is now casting a wider net to find a successor for Christiane Schenderlein (CDU), who transferred to the Ministry of Health as a State Secretary during the cabinet reshuffle at the end of July. The selection process is no longer limited to the world of football; according to “Bild”, the Chancellery is also focusing on successful individuals from other disciplines, specifically naming Olympic champions and gold medal winners. The State Ministry aims to send a strong signal, promoting both elite and grassroots sports.
Keßler earned her designation as a professional soccer player in 2014 and won the German championship four times in total. Furthermore, “Bild” reports that she is being considered as a potential managing director for the new women’s football Bundesliga association, where she is reportedly considered an absolute top candidate for the role.
