Konstantin von Notz, Deputy Chair of the Green Party faction, accused Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) of failing to adequately counter hybrid threats following the drone incident at Leipzig/Halle airport. Von Notz pointed out that while Merz announced a comprehensive strategy a year ago, “far too little has happened” since then, he told the “Handelsblatt”.
According to Von Notz, Germany is “far from being ready” in its defense against drone attacks, in protecting critical infrastructure, and in managing disinformation. He specifically criticized Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt (CSU), stating that the minister was not addressing the issue with the “required seriousness,” instead focusing on “quick headlines and ministerial squabbles over competence.”
Merz had previously announced he intended to present findings regarding the perpetrators of the attempted drone attack in Leipzig and had threatened consequences for those responsible. Von Notz welcomed any renewed announcements from the Chancellor leading to faster and more resolute action. He stressed that hybrid attacks must be rapidly attributed and met with consequences, insisting that the Chancellor’s words must finally be followed up with decisive actions.
