Dax edges up slightly as investors wait for Nvidia earnings amid lower oil prices

The DAX saw a slight uptick in the morning on Wednesday, moving into positive territory after a subdued start. Around 12:30 PM, the index was calculated at approximately 26,305 points, representing a gain of 0.2 percent compared to the previous trading day. The leading stocks included Deutsche Bank, Heidelberg Materials, Commerzbank, and Qiagen, while the stocks at the bottom of the list were SAP, Volkswagen, and Zalando.

Andreas Lipkow, Chief Market Analyst at CMC Markets, noted that investors remained cautious, stating that the market was currently paralyzed-almost unable to act-while awaiting the quarterly figures from the AI high-flyer, Nvidia.

Lipkow explained that the DAX is finding support in the continued drop in crude oil prices, which, in turn, is moderating inflation concerns. He added that this decline dampens the impact of statements suggesting potential further interest rate hikes by the European Central Bank. This is because energy prices exert a strong influence, particularly through secondary effects, leading some European policymakers to worry.

Regarding individual stocks, Qiagen is currently attracting interest due to renewed takeover speculation, Lipkow added. Furthermore, decreasing economic uncertainty and signs of easing tensions in the Middle East, which are impacting energy prices, are making banking and financial stocks appear more attractive again. Conversely, SAP, a heavy index component, is facing selling pressure following a downgrade by an analyst.

In broader market movements, the European community currency weakened slightly midday on Wednesday; the Euro traded at $1.1663, while the Dollar was priced at 0.8574 Euros. Concurrently, the oil price fell sharply. The Brent North Sea crude futures were priced at $85.94 per barrel around noon German time-a decrease of 264 cents, or 3.0 percent, from the close of the previous trading day.
