According to the German government, the renaming of Lake Ontario by US President Donald Trump is of no significance. A spokesperson for the Foreign Office stated Friday, responding to the dts news agency, that it is simply an “American decision” and, for the time being, “has no further implications for other countries.”
The spokesperson emphasized that the designation of waterways will not provide grounds for dispute and stated explicitly that the government does not fear resentment from the US President. Trivializing the controversy, the spokesman further remarked that just as football is called “soccer” in the United States, it is not called soccer elsewhere.
The decision itself was made by President Trump via executive order, renaming the border lake to “Lake America” amidst the ongoing trade dispute with Canada. Canada, however, has rejected this renaming attempt.
