The Green faction in the Bundestag has accused the Black-Red coalition government of disproportionately affecting children and families amid its austerity plans. According to a resolution paper from the faction leadership, reported by the “Süddeutsche Zeitung”, the Greens argue that the government is reducing support for families while simultaneously allocating billions of euros to the wealthy and large corporations, labeling the government’s approach as “socially unjust.”
In the draft resolution for its end-of-week plenary session, the Greens outlined its strategic priorities for the coming months. The faction made it clear that it plans to strongly oppose government cuts to several key programs, including the child maintenance subsidy (“Unterhaltsvorschuss”), parental allowance (“Elterngeld”), and the immediate family supplement. The faction leadership insisted that the Black-Red coalition must retract these planned cuts, warning that the current obsession with budget reductions by the Union and SPD will particularly hurt those who are already financially vulnerable and face an elevated risk of poverty.
To finance public services and counteract these cuts, the Greens are advocating for a “fairer tax system.” Their proposals include increasing taxes on companies and inheritance, as well as implementing stricter taxation on digital enterprises or ending current exemptions for heirs with substantial fortunes.
