Heiner Wilmer, Chairman of the German Bishops’ Conference, warned voters against casting ballots for the far-right AfD just days before the state election in Saxony-Anhalt. Speaking to the FAZ, he appealed to the maturity and conscience of the electorate in the region. Wilmer stressed that, from a Christian perspective, the emphasis must always be on charity and the inviolable dignity of every human being, particularly the most vulnerable members of society.
According to Wilmer, there is “no alternative” to uphold these core values, whether in Germany or elsewhere. He criticized the AfD, stating that the party attacks these fundamental principles and undermines the democratic state form itself. “Their alternative for Germany is a society where freedom, human dignity, and democracy are curtailed,” the chairman asserted.
Wilmer also acknowledged that many people, including Christians, felt that politicians from established parties were not taking their worries seriously. He observed that many residents in rural areas, in particular, felt neglected.
When asked if the Catholic Church shares responsibility for the rise of the AfD because it has retreated from rural areas, Wilmer responded firmly: “As a church, we must not retreat from rural areas, and we are not doing so.” He added that the Church requires centers, creativity, and must find answers to “how to deal with the decreasing number of parishioners and priests.”
Finally, regarding the ongoing dispute with the Vatican over the blessing of homosexual couples, the chairman displayed cautious optimism. “I am firmly convinced that Rome trusts the individuals in charge and believes in their capacity to make correct decisions, taking into account the local situation and the universal Church,” Wilmer stated.
