The actor Michael Mendl has passed away at the age of 82. His agent informed the Süddeutsche Zeitung on Saturday that he had “passed away peacefully.” Mendl was a highly respected character actor who was open about his health; since 2007, he had battled various forms of cancer.
Born in Lünen, North Rhine-Westphalia, in 1944, Mendl began his acting career as a young person. He gained significant recognition on German theater stages during the 1980s and was a frequent guest at the Salzburg Festival in the 1990s. While he had made early appearances in television series during the 1970s, his work in front of the camera really took off in the 1990s.
Mendl became widely known for his role as General of the Artillery Helmuth Weidling in the Oscar-nominated film “Der Untergang” (Downfall), which he played in 2004. He also tackled influential figures, having embodied former Chancellor Willy Brandt in the TV movie “Im Schatten der Macht” in 2003. He frequently took on roles of powerful individuals, often portraying criminals or psychopaths. His most recent appearance was in an episode of the ZDF series “Ein starkes Team” that aired this year.
