Alice Weidel, the chairwoman of the AfD, stated that she could see Ulrich Siegmund taking on a leadership role in the national politics, according to her own assessment. She told the Funke-Mediengruppe that currently, his assignments in Saxony-Anhalt focus either on serving as Minister-President or as the leader of the opposition, noting that he sees it that way himself. Weidel added that the prospect of him holding a leadership position at the federal level “long-term and after his work on the ground in Saxony-Anhalt” was “completely clear,” calling him a “good and credible politician.”
The AfD’s top candidate in Saxony-Anhalt had reportedly run an “incredibly strong campaign,” Weidel observed. The deputy co-spokesperson for the federal AfD emphasized that her goal as a federal spokesperson has always been to “build up various leaders within the party,” adding that Ulrich Siegmund was “certainly part of that.”
Regarding potential coalition negotiations for the AfD in Saxony-Anhalt, Weidel stated: “I will leave the negotiations with my colleagues in Saxony-Anhalt. I will not jump the gun.” She confirmed that talks were scheduled to begin on Monday, but specified they would only be held “with those forces that help us push through our positions.” She noted that the AfD had already engaged in discussions with other parties prior to this election. Furthermore, according to Weidel, a government scenario including the BSW is “very interesting” for the AfD, and a minority government is a “relevant option” for the party in Saxony-Anhalt.
