Following a historic electoral debacle in the state parliamentary election in Saxony-Anhalt, members of the CDU state executive board tendered their resignations on Monday evening. The CDU state leader and Prime Minister, Sven Schulze, announced this after a meeting of the committee in Magdeburg. The party leadership will be newly elected at a special session scheduled for November or December. Schulze indicated that he himself will not stand for re-election. Until a new party leadership is chosen, the current state executive board will remain in office. As of yet, it remains unknown who will apply for the position of state chairman. The CDU’s reaction followed its worst result ever in a state parliamentary election in Saxony-Anhalt. On Sunday, the party secured only 17.2 percent of the votes, a significant drop from the 37.1 percent it achieved in 2021. The AfD emerged as the strongest force with 43.8 percent of the vote. Within the CDU, calls for a complete personnel overhaul were already heard immediately after the election. The CDU anticipates playing the role of the opposition in the state parliament in the future.
