German Exports Dip Month-on-Month, Yet See Annual Growth in July 2026

Seasonally and calendar-adjusted figures released by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) on Tuesday indicated that German exports in July 2026 decreased by 0.8 percent compared to June 2026, while imports dropped by 5.7 percent. Looking year-on-year to July 2025, exports rose by 6.1 percent and imports increased by 3.0 percent.

In July 2026, Germany exported goods valued at 138.2 billion euros and imported goods valued at 116.9 billion euros. This resulted in a trade surplus of 21.3 billion euros for July 2026. This represented an improvement over the previous month’s seasonally adjusted trade balance, which was at 15.4 billion euros. The balance in July 2025 had been 16.8 billion euros.

Breaking down the international trade, goods were exported to EU Member States worth 78.0 billion euros, against imports valued at 59.6 billion euros. Compared to June 2026, these exports to EU countries fell by 1.6 percent, with imports from these states declining by 6.1 percent. Within the Eurozone, exports amounted to 53.9 billion euros (-2.8 percent), while imports from the Eurozone were 39.9 billion euros (-6.5 percent). Furthermore, exports to EU states outside the Eurozone reached 24.1 billion euros (+1.1 percent), and imports from those countries were 19.6 billion euros (-5.1 percent).

Trade with third countries saw exports valued at 60.2 billion euros, offset by imports of 57.4 billion euros. Relative to the previous month, exports to third countries grew by 0.2 percent, while imports from these nations decreased by 5.3 percent.

In terms of specific trade partners, the United States was the primary destination for German exports in July 2026. Exports to the US totaled 14.4 billion euros, a significant increase of 19.1 percent from June 2026. Furthermore, compared to July 2025, exports to the US were up 28.3 percent on a seasonally and calendar-adjusted basis. Conversely, exports to the United Kingdom fell by 7.2 percent from the previous month, reaching 6.7 billion euros, and exports to China dropped by 9.5 percent compared to June 2026, settling at 5.6 billion euros.

Regarding imports, China was the largest source of goods in July 2026, contributing 15.2 billion euros. This represented a slight decrease of 7.5 percent from the preceding month. Imports from the United States fell by 8.2 percent to 7.9 billion euros, while imports from the United Kingdom saw a marginal increase of 1.0 percent over the same period, reaching 3.2 billion euros.
