Following the AfD’s successful election campaign in Saxony-Anhalt, the Left Party (“Die Linke”) reports a significant surge in membership across the entire country. A party spokesman to the “Rheinische Post” disclosed that 1,088 people joined the party within the first 24 hours following the state election-a figure many times higher than what would typically be expected. The spokesman noted that normally, the party experiences a daily influx of new members in the double digits.
In Saxony-Anhalt alone, more than 100 new members joined in the hours immediately following the election results. Consequently, the Left Party now boasts over 131,500 members nationwide. For comparison, this number was around 126,000 in mid-June, and the party projected that in late 2024 it would potentially have even fewer members.
Party leader Ines Schwerdtner told the “Rheinische Post” that for many individuals, the Left Party represents a dependable safeguard against the far-right. Schwerdtner added that the party aims to be a space where people who are afraid of what might happen in the future can gather, organize, and strengthen one another. She emphasized that the fact that over 1,000 people chose to organize themselves within the party in a single day demonstrated the level of trust people place in the organization.
