SPD Slams Trump’s Praise for AfD, Citing Threat to German Economy

The SPD has voiced strong objection regarding US President Donald Trump’s congratulatory comments on the AfD’s electoral success in Saxony-Anhalt. Dirk Wiese, the parliamentary managing director of the Bundestag faction, told RTL and ntv, “I find it extremely bizarre that Donald Trump congratulates a right-extremist fringe party on an election victory.” Wiese called upon Chancellor Merz to take a decisive stance against the US President, urging him to use strong language the next time he encounters Trump.

The statement highlights how Trump’s actions, such as the war in Iran and his tariff policies, have jeopardized the German economy. Wiese remarked, “And the AfD is sitting on his lap.” In line with this criticism, AfD leader Weidel is also advocating for Germany’s departure from the Eurozone and the Schengen Area. The SPD noted that “this is an obituary for the German economy, which both Trump and Weidel are representing in unison.”
