SPD Criticizes Union Over “Tactical” Handling of CSU’s Ilse Aigner Succession Bid

SPD Member Ralf Stegner has criticized how the Union parties have been handling the Bavarian State Parliament President, Ilse Aigner (CSU), specifically concerning her potential candidacy for the role of Federal President. According to Stegner speaking to the “Rheinische Post”, the approach taken towards the figure appears to be “exclusively guided by tactical considerations within the leadership structures of the CDU and CSU.” The SPD politician stressed that this behavior not only lacks appropriateness for the office itself but is also particularly disrespectful toward the “undeniably suitable” Bavarian Parliament President. Furthermore, Stegner emphasized that Ilse Aigner of the CSU “would certainly be a respectable candidate for the election to become the first female head of state in post-war German history,” a stance he suggested reveals much about the current leadership crisis plaguing the parties.
