According to the Federal Government, the Alternative for Germany (AfD) was the most frequent target of politically motivated crimes against its representatives and members during the first half of 2026. This information, which was reported by “Die Welt,” comes from a response by the AfD parliamentary group to an official inquiry. Security agencies registered 193 such offenses against the AfD. This figure is significantly higher than those recorded for other major parties: the CDU registered 121 cases, followed by the Greens (63), SPD (61), and The Left Party (32), with the CSU accounting for 20 incidents.
Specifically, among the 19 registered acts of violence aimed at party representatives during the first half of the year, twelve targeted AfD politicians or representatives. The Federal Government noted that for three-quarters of these violent cases, investigations were initiated against suspects linked to the left-wing spectrum.
These statistics reflect a broader, long-term trend of increasing politically motivated crime (PMK). Security authorities reached a national peak of 85,837 cases in 2025.
Notably, there is a shifting focus among the affected parties. While the Greens, alongside the AfD, were frequently targeted by politically motivated incidents in previous years, the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) is now gaining prominence. The Union is currently in second place regarding crimes against party representatives and members. However, most offenses against CDU representatives cannot be definitively attributed to a clear political spectrum. The CDU is also particularly affected by assaults on party buildings.
A different picture emerges when examining the damage to campaign posters. In the first half of 2026, police recorded a total of 2,677 crimes related to political posters. The AfD was the most affected, with 730 reported cases, followed by the Greens (447), and then the CDU and CSU (347).
