Hospital Reform Faces Major Overhaul

Following recent discussions between federal and state governments, Gerald Gaß, Chairman of the German Hospital Association (DKG), expressed optimism regarding the continuation of the hospital reform. In an interview with the “Rheinische Post” Gaß stated that the constructive dialogue re-established with Federal Health Minister Nina Warneke signals an end to a period of stalled progress and confrontation. He highlighted the commitment to the €4 billion in immediate transformation costs, reaffirmed by the Minister, as a positive development.

However, Gaß also emphasized the urgent need for modifications to the current reform proposals. He stressed the importance of accommodating the specific needs of individual states and granting them greater autonomy. Key areas requiring adjustments, according to Gaß, include the planned base payment system and the “Inek Grouper”. He urged for flexibility and a willingness to adapt to ensure the reform’s objectives are not compromised. Gaß further pointed out that the proposed list for oncological surgery requires revision, as it currently carries the risk of exacerbating existing care shortages. The DKG is placing significant hopes on the upcoming legislative process to address these concerns and achieve a successful reform.
