Former Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer believes the NATO alliance in its current form will not survive. Speaking to the weekly magazine “Zeit”, Fischer stated, “I do not assume that NATO will survive.”
He expressed concern that the NATO system as a transatlantic security alliance will not endure. However, he cautioned against abandoning the concept of a military alliance for Europe, suggesting that such a structure, potentially including countries like Canada or the UK, should be maintained. Fischer argued that “one must also fight defensive battles, with all strength, sometimes.”
According to Fischer, the decline in trust that transatlantic relations experienced during the tenure of US President Donald Trump compels Europe to take decisive action. He asserted that if Europe grows stronger-in its political maneuvering and militarily-a new kind of relationship will emerge. He concluded that the post-war state of affairs, characterized by the overwhelming dominance of the United States within the NATO sphere, is over, and Europe must be capable of defending itself.
