Bovenschulte Backs Klingbeil in SPD Leadership Debate, Urging Stability Over Overhaul

Bremen Mayor Andreas Bovenschulte (SPD) has publicly supported party leader Lars Klingbeil in the debate over a new SPD leadership, stating to “Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland” that “Lars Klingbeil is doing a good job. I see no need for any changes in this regard.”

Bovenschulte also countered arguments within the party calling for a separation between the party chairmanship and ministerial offices, explaining that neither option-combining the roles nor keeping them separate-is without advantages or disadvantages. He asserted, however, that “the fate of the SPD does not depend on [this particular structural change].”

Regarding leadership structure, Bovenschulte expressed confidence in the existing dual leadership, praising the Minister-Presidents of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and Saarland, Manuela Schwesig and Anke Rehlinger, as “undoubtedly very well suited.” He believe it is sensible for the SPD to continue operating with a dual leadership structure, adding, “We are in difficult times. We shouldn’t change everything.”

The politician also disputed calls for a fundamental change in the SPD’s course. While acknowledging the need for greater clarity regarding their direction, he rejected the notion that “the SPD has to reinvent itself.” He emphasized the timeless nature of the party’s core values-freedom, equality, and solidarity-noting that “we want to generate the greatest possible prosperity and distribute it fairly. This connection is the unique characteristic of the Social Democrats. We shouldn’t abandon this, but rather assert it even more offensively.”

This renewed election for the party leadership was accelerated to January following the resignation of party leader and Minister of Labor, Bärbel Bas. While Klingbeil, who is also the Minister of Finance, has kept his renewed candidacy open, former Minister of Labor Hubertus Heil has declared his willingness to run.
