A fire on a cargo ship in the port of Qingdao, located on China’s northeastern coast, resulted in at least 20 deaths on Thursday. Chinese media reports that 42 people were aboard the vessel, the “Ocean Melody,” when the fire broke out, as the ship was undergoing repairs in the port.
The fire started around 11 a.m. local time (5 a.m. German time) and was extinguished by 2:30 p.m. Twelve people were successfully rescued, and five others are hospitalized in stable condition. Five individuals remain missing.
The ship had entered the shipyard on August 31 and remained there since.
