German Corporate Insolvencies Surge in June Amid Growing Economic Strain

In June 2026, German district courts registered 2,266 corporate insolvencies filed that month, representing a 15.8% increase compared to the previous year. It should be noted, however, that this registered data only enters the statistics after the initial decision by the insolvency court; the actual filing date often occurs nearly three months earlier.

From January to June 2026, a total of 12,812 corporate insolvency applications were recorded, an increase of 6.7% over the corresponding period in the previous year. This figure is lower than the peak of 13,253 cases recorded in the first half of 2013.

The financial demands made by creditors in the corporate insolvencies reported during the first half of 2026 amounted to approximately 18.5 billion euros, according to the district courts. This is a decrease from the 28.2 billion euros in the same period of 2025. This reduction in total claims, despite an increase in the number of insolvencies, is attributed to the fact that more economically significant companies filed for insolvency in the first half of 2025 than in the first half of 2026.

When analyzed per 10,000 companies, there were 36.2 corporate insolvencies in the first half of 2026. The highest frequency was observed in the transport and storage sector, accounting for 71.6 cases per 10,000 companies. This was followed by the hospitality industry with 59.6 cases, and the construction industry with 53.4 insolvencies.

Regarding consumer insolvency, 6,839 cases were reported in June 2026, which was a 5.1% increase over the previous year. For the entire first half of 2026, 38,932 consumer insolvency cases were reported, indicating a 2.4% rise compared to the previous year’s period, according to statisticians.
