Dennis Radtke, head of the CDU labor wing CDA, is demanding a swift decision regarding the discussion about initiating a party ban procedure against the AfD. Radtke stated to Focus that the political decision to have the AfD’s constitutionality reviewed should have been made much sooner, arguing that the delay has only prolonged the public debate. In this view, the initiative put forth by Hendrik Wüst of the CDU is entirely appropriate. The Minister-President of North Rhine-Westphalia had proposed a federal-state working group to examine the possibility of a prohibition process.
However, Radtke concurrently criticized the ongoing debate as being overly simplistic. He expressed concern that the discussion creates the false impression that parties can decide to ban an unfavorable competitor outright, dismissing this as “nonsense.” He emphasized that there is a legal path to challenge a party’s constitutionality before the Federal Constitutional Court. Such a review could result in either a complete cessation of activity or the exclusion of the party from receiving public funding.
