Speaking ahead of the EU Arctic Summit in Rovaniemi, Finland, the Finnish Ambassador to Germany, Kai Sauer, issued a stern warning regarding the growing involvement of both China and Russia in the region. According to Sauer, there is substantial economic interest in the Arctic, specifically concerning rare minerals and the newly opening maritime routes.
In light of the recent visit by EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to Nuuk, Greenland, and the accompanying investment package exceeding 200 million euros, Sauer expressed hope that European interest will expand beyond Greenland to encompass the entire Arctic.
The diplomat also displayed confidence regarding Finland’s role, particularly concerning the increasing importance of icebreaker fleets. He stated that Finland is planning 80 percent of all icebreakers globally, with 60 percent of those being manufactured within Finland, despite efforts from other nations. Sauer concluded by asserting, “We are a strong player in the Arctic and do not need to hide.”
