According to reports from Bild, the formation of the Bundeswehr brigade in Lithuania may necessitate the mandatory deployment of soldiers to NATO’s Eastern Flank, an order that Defense Minister Boris Pistorius (SPD) is expected to issue. Initial deployments could reportedly begin at the end of September, potentially affecting up to 1,000 soldiers. In the longer term, the combat brigade in Lithuania is set to comprise a total of 5,000 Bundeswehr members.
However, the plans face staffing challenges, as sufficient voluntary enlistments have reportedly been lacking in recent months, particularly among specialists. The Defence Committee is scheduled to be informed about the developments on Monday at 2 p.m.
