Dirk Wiese, the parliamentary manager for the SPD parliamentary group, has expressed concern over what he describes as “great nervousness” within the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), calling on the Union to continue working collaboratively on the joint reform project. Wiese left the question open during an interview with the broadcaster “Welt” as to whether Chancellor Friedrich Merz himself needed to head this effort.
Wiese was dissatisfied with the Chancellor’s comments suggesting that citizens are “lazy.” He argued that the debate surrounding “lifestyle part-time work” or the notion that specific professional groups are beneficiaries has been counterproductive. According to Wiese, if the goal is to implement reforms, the public must be involved, and the CDU must engage in self-reflection. He asserted that the Chancellor needs to adopt a different tone. Nevertheless, Wiese remains confident that the parties can successfully govern the country from a democratic middle ground in their coalition with the Union.
When asked whether the SPD would remain in the government without Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Wiese gave an evasive response, noting the impression that “nerves are currently quite strained” within the CDU. However, he reiterated his request for the coalition partner to refocus and work together to improve various issues. He also pointed out that Markus Söder had recently stated that the coalition aimed for success and that they were now working together to make the right decisions for the country, even following the state elections on Sunday.
Furthermore, Wiese dismissed the demand made by the chairman of the small business parliamentary group within the Union for the removal of SPD Labor Minister Bärbel Bas, calling it counterproductive. He argued that if citizens disagreed with something, it was not the kind of public statements being made. Wiese stressed that public bickering is unacceptable and unhelpful. Finally, he rejected the notion that a ministerial role and party leadership position should be separated within the SPD.
